Success, as it was handed to me, was a performance of reliability.
Be on time. Be consistent. Be easy to manage. Produce. Do not make the room work harder to understand you. If you can do those things, you may keep your seat.
I got good at the appearance of that. I was less good at surviving the cost.
A better measure, the one I am still writing toward, is whether a life can remain habitable to the person living it. Not impressive. Habitable.
