The Story We Refused to Update
A look at the version of you that other people never bother to revise.
Listen
People fall in love with the first draft of you. Then they stop reading.
The story of a child who cannot sit still, who forgets, who talks too much, who cannot be trusted with the simple things — that story is easy to keep. It requires no new information. It makes other people feel oriented. It lets a room stay comfortable.
The problem is not that the first draft contained no truth. The problem is that it was allowed to become the only edition.
A life is allowed to keep happening after other people have decided what it means. The body changes. The work changes. The shame learns new disguises. None of that reaches the people who already filed you under a heading.
Updating the story asks something of the listener. Most rooms would rather keep the version that asks the least of them.
